most Americans, semiconductors remain invisible\u2014embedded in smartphones, appliances, cars, and computers without a second thought. But for those in national security and defense policy, the global semiconductor industry is now front and center, tied to questions of military readiness, economic resilience, and geopolitical competition.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-779ee07 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"779ee07\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAnd yet, many discussions in Washington focus too narrowly on one slice of the problem: domestic chip fabrication. As Christian Cabaniss, a military operations analyst with Systems Planning &#038; Analysis (SPA) and USMC Col Ret, points out, \u201cChips don\u2019t just come from fabs. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) alone produces around 90 percent of the world\u2019s most advanced chips. That geographic concentration is undeniably risky\u2014but it\u2019s only part of the story.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5307456 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5307456\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cSemiconductors are in almost everything we use today, from washing machines to jet planes,\u201d Cabaniss notes. \u201cBut focusing only on where they\u2019re fabricated ignores the broader web of relationships, industries, and infrastructure that make that production possible.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b1c47b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7b1c47b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Chips are not born fully formed out of silicon wafers.
